How Long Does it Take to Build Muscle Realistically?

There are many factors that dictate how fast we can build muscle, namely they are:

All of these factors have an effect on how fast we can build muscle.

However, there is a lot of misinformation out there, especially for beginners.

Today I would like to give you 3 concepts to help you understand how long it takes to build muscle realistically.

Don’t buy into scams

Supplement companies ( I won’t mention names ) and muscle magazines are just interested in taking your hard-earned dollars.

They make outrageous claims such as “build 20lbs of muscle in 10 days!” or “gain 50lbs of muscle with our 12-week program!” and as beginners, we often buy into these ideas.

Then they have a picture of a swole, huge professional bodybuilder selling their product.

Walk away from these adverts! These are scams!

It is just about impossible to even come close to their claims.

This is the importance of understanding the muscle-building limits our bodies have.

Don’t Aim to Look Like Your Favorite Pro Bodybuilder

I am going to just go out and say this. More than likely you will NEVER look like your favorite professional bodybuilder.

Now I am not being negative, I am trying to help you set realistic achievable goals so you can attain the best body you can for your body type.

It doesn’t help you aim to look like one of them and then get disappointed and give up at the end of the day, I want to help you set realistic goals.

You need to remember these guys you see getting advertised in the muscle magazines and on supplement labels are all top-level athletes.

They have access to all the steroids they need, professional nutritionists working with them, god-like genetics, and all the supplementation they could ever want.

However, for the average Joe, this just isn’t the case. This does not mean you have to simply throw the towel in and give up though, on the contrary!

All of us can build a good amount of muscle in the right time frame and my idea is to help you understand this so you can set realistic goals so when you reach them the reward is so much sweeter.

So How Long Does it Take to Build Muscle Realistically – Setting the Right Goals

So finally the answer to the question you have all been asking!

Realistically if all the factors are in order such as training, nutrition, rest, and consistency with all of these as a beginner, then 1-2Lbs OF MUSCLE PER MONTH is a realistic and tangible goal to aim for. If you are severely underweight or an absolute beginner/younger man you can even build 2-3lbs per month.

For some, this may be a bit faster and for really hard gainers this may be a bit slower, it varies from person to person.

That is the general guideline to go by though.

If this doesn’t sound as much as you had imagined then I am sorry.

It is better that I am honest and you aim for something attainable and find joy in the success of hitting your realistic goals then have the stench of failure of unattainable ones.

And after lifting for a couple of years this number is even less.

Real-World Example

Let’s just take a step back and look at an example.

Let us use our hypothetical beginner lifter Robert who hasn’t seen the inside of a gym for the last 15 years. Robert is a 35-year-old businessman 5’9 and weighs 110lbs at 8% bodyfat.

Sporting average genetics, and is underweight due to his diet and sedentary lifestyle.

He starts lifting now, gets his diet, training, and rest in order, and consistently lifts for the next 4 years.

If he gains just 1lb of muscle per month, in 4 years he has already gained 48lbs of muscle alone, this is without the bulk he has put on too.

If he has bulked up a little too in terms of body fat and is at 10% which in my opinion is the sweet spot.

Then after 4 short years, he is around 160-170lbs at 10% body fat naturally, and let me tell you this looks amazing! If he gained more than 1lb of muscle per month then he would look even better!

Set a goal of building 1-2lbs muscle per month but couple it with smaller goals when starting out.

Just remember as you become a more accomplished lifter, each year the amount of muscle you can gain gets less and less

If your goal is to gain 50lbs of muscle ( I am not talking about weight ) for example this would take around 4-5 years on average, maybe less maybe more.

So set your first goal to build 5lbs of muscle, this may only take 3 or 3 and a half months, then make your next goal 10lbs of muscle gain.

Cut the 50lbs into sizable chunks so it doesn’t feel like it’s taking so long and you have something to work towards and before you know it you will be swole!

I myself started at 110lbs and over the last 12 years bulked up to over 240lbs! Granted I am not as lean as some but that’s due to playing rugby.

So go and make some gains and build muscle!
