Good Carbs and Bad Carbs – A Muscle Building Perspective

Carbohydrates for those who don’t know, are the main source of energy for our bodies. However, there are good carbs and bad carbs.

Carbohydrates are essential for building muscle, especially when we are bulking up.

You need to know the difference as bad carbs will cause fat gain not muscle gain and are a high way to obesity.

Being a crucial part of a healthy balanced diet, we cannot ignore carbohydrates.

There are different types of carbohydrates, some are very good for you but some are also very bad for you.

Carbohydrates are either sugars, fiber or starches or a mix of the 3.

“So, how do I tell the difference?” You may ask. This is what I am going to do for you today.

Here is the low down on both the good and bad carbohydrates and how you can differentiate between them.

Simple Carbohydrates

What is a simple carbohydrate? To put it plainly simple carbohydrates are just sugars.

However, this doesn’t mean all simple carbohydrates are bad.

Naturally occurring simple carbohydrates from the sugars found in fruits and some vegetables are GOOD simple carbohydrates.

These types of simple carbs are packed with nutrients and usually have fiber in them to making them slightly more complex and slower to digest.

An apple is a great example.

BAD simple carbohydrates are another story!

These are refined carbohydrates, this means all the nutrients and fiber have been removed.

Leaving just pure sugars, and our bodies are not designed to process such vast amounts of sugar.

TIP: Look at the ingredients. If there is anything that finishes with OSE such as sucralose, sucrose, fructose, etc. these are refined junk sugars.

This is what causes blood sugar spikes, giving us sugar highs and then sugar lows causing us to crave these bad carbohydrates.

In turn, this causes a blood sugar roller-coaster. Just because something is dribbled with fruit, for example, does NOT mean it is good for you.

This is terrible when our aim is to gain muscle, NOT fat! Avoid these at all costs.

Remember, our bodies can only process so much sugar, after that it says to itself:

“I am getting such an abundance, but I can only process so much, let me store the rest for later, just in case.”

The bodies aim is to keep you alive and thus by nature is a hoarder, and we were not designed for such high volumes of sugars.

TIP: Stay away from “low fat” sweetened products, for example, in just 10oz of sweetened yogurt has over 7 teaspoons of sugar!

The byproduct of this is triglycerides or fat cells. Unused sugar is converted into triglycerides to be used later on.

This is why drinking too much soda or sugary foods causes a fat belly.

The body stores the simple carbs it cannot use in the form of fat, and this is usually around the waist for men.

Below is a great info-graphic for smart simple carbohydrate choices.

Complex Carbohydrates

These types of carbohydrates are carbs that take longer to break down, delivering a slow and steady amount of sugar into the bloodstream.

Making them ideal for muscle building. They are nutrient-packed

and provide steady constant energy during the day.

This is why complex unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice or whole-wheat bread deliver slow constant energy supplies to the bloodstream.

Meaning no blood sugar roller-coaster with these as these carbs take so much longer to digest and get transferred into energy.

However, you need to be vigilant when choosing complex carbohydrates.

TIP: When choosing carbohydrates, choose ones that can spoil quickly, this usually means they are not full of preservatives and rubbish.

For example, just because you buy a muffin with whole-wheat flour, it doesn’t make it healthy due to the large amounts of sugar they used to sweeten it.

Instead choose natural complex carbohydrates such as legumes, whole wheat bread and products, brown rice, whole grains, whole dairy products which are unsweetened, vegetables (especially cruciferous ones), nuts, and avocados.

Stay away from processed complex carbohydrates.
