We will be discussing the benefits of squats. Not all exercises are created equal! And the huge benefit of squats shows us it is definitely one of the BEST exercises out there you can be doing.

With that being said, I would like to present you with 7 benefits of squats and why you should NEVER neglect to do them!

The Benefits of Squats #1 Increase Anabolic Hormones

Squats have been proven to increase testosterone as well as growth hormone, and this is a HUGE benefit of squats.

Both of these hormones are absolutely crucial to building muscle.

In a 1999 study conducted by the Journal of Applied Physiology, it found that both testosterone and IGF-1 increased significantly as well as a noted decrease in cortisol (the stress hormone).

This means increased muscle mass with less fat!

This is due to the extreme load squats place on our bodies, the body has no choice but to raise testosterone and growth hormone to deal with this increased load.

Performing squats and deadlifts are one of the 5 ways you can naturally increase testosterone!

The Benefits of Squats #2 Increase Overall Body Strength

We have already shown you that squats increase your anabolic hormones, but another benefit of squats is that it increases overall body strength.

This is because the squat is a compound movement and utilizes almost your entire body to move the weight.

Yes, it does work the quads primarily, but your lower back, core, lats, traps, calves, hamstrings, and glutes are involved too!

Having the result that if your squat goes up then your deadlift, bench, etc. will be going up too.

The Benefits of Squats #3 Improves Circulation

The circulatory system is one of the 12 essential body systems – you can read more about what they are here.

For those who are regulars to this blog know I like to liken many examples to cars, as many of us guys are car guys so bear with me.

Our cars also have many systems, should one of them not work correctly we will very quickly have a badly performing, slow or downright broken vehicle.

It is exactly the same with our bodies, we need all 12 systems to work together for us to be at optimal performance.

And another huge benefit of squats is that the squat (as well as the deadlift) does WONDERS for our circulatory system.

This is because it gets our hearts pounding, blood pumping, and gets our veins transporting blood all over our body!

Squats have even been hailed by some homeopaths as a treatment for pure circulation.

The Benefits of Squats #4 Improved Flexibility

If you work a sedentary job or if you are just not active at all then your joints will naturally start to deteriorate.

This is exacerbated by age too, as when we age we naturally lose this elasticity as well, so squats are a great way to keep looking and feeling young.

Deep squats keep your glutes, hamstrings, knees, calves, and ankles nice and flexible as they are all part of the chain while squatting.

Now remember in order for this to be effective you need to be going a sufficient distance down in the squat, 90 degrees or less, but no more than 90 degrees.

As we age it becomes increasingly harder to go deep which is understandable, however, don’t sell yourself short by doing half squats.

The benchmark is 90 degrees or less.

The Benefits of Squats #5 Burns Fat Fast

This is why squats are one of the 8 BEST exercises you can do.As we mentioned in Squat Benefit #3 squats improve circulation.

And by getting your heart pumping like crazy it has one great side effect – Insane Fat BURN!

It creates a massive oxygen deficit causing you to burn an amazing amount of calories.

The Benefits of Squats #6 Prevent Injuries

As we covered in point #4 squats improve flexibility, but they go a step further.

By squatting heavy we place a high load on our tendons and ligaments, this causes them to adapt.

As we squat more and more and the tendons and ligaments strengthen more and more we will find ourselves far less susceptible to injuries.

This is because our ligaments and tendons can take the heavy loads we require from them and then the injury is far less likely to happen.

Squats also build all the supporting tissue around your muscles as it is a free weight movement requiring your body to stabilize and balance the weight.

The Benefits of Squats #7 Builds Big Calves

Squatting deep (90 degrees or below) engages a LOT of calf muscle.

This means that performing regular deep squats you will be building a great set of calves too!
